Best Beaches in Koh Samui: A Local's Guide to Swimming, Snorkeling, Sunsets & Hidden Gems
Last updated June 2026

One of the biggest mistakes visitors make when planning a trip to Koh Samui is assuming all beaches on the island are the same. They're not.

Some beaches are lined with beach clubs, bars, and water sports. Others remain surprisingly quiet, even during high season. Some are perfect for families with young children, while others are better suited for snorkeling, sunset chasing, or simply escaping the crowds.

Having lived on Koh Samui for years and welcomed visitors from all over the world, we've learned that there is no single "best" beach. The perfect beach depends entirely on the type of holiday you're looking for.

If you're still deciding where to base yourself, don't miss our guide on Where to Stay on Koh Samui, where we compare the island's most popular areas and explain which part of the island is best suited to different travel styles.

In this beach guide, we'll help you discover not only the most beautiful beaches on Koh Samui, but also the hidden gems, snorkeling spots, family-friendly beaches, and local favorites that many visitors never hear about.

A Local Reality Check About Beaches on Koh Samui
Social media often makes every beach look deserted and perfect. The reality is that beach conditions can change daily. Wind direction, tides, rainfall, season, and even the time of day can dramatically affect water clarity, swimming conditions, snorkeling visibility, and crowds..
A beach that looks stunning in one person's Instagram photo may look completely different when you visit.

That's one reason we recommend exploring multiple beaches during your stay rather than spending your entire holiday in one location.

A quick note before we dive in: the "best" beach on Koh Samui depends entirely on what you're looking for.

Some travelers absolutely love Chaweng's lively atmosphere, beach clubs, and nightlife. Others spend one afternoon there and immediately start searching for somewhere quieter.
Likewise, some visitors dream of long sunset walks on peaceful beaches, while others want clear water, water sports, and restaurants within walking distance.

That's why we've included not just the island's most famous beaches, but also lesser-known spots that might be a much better fit for your travel style.

Why Koh Samui's Beaches Are So Different

Koh Samui may only be 228 square kilometers in size, but its coastline is surprisingly diverse.

On the east coast, you'll find famous beaches such as Chaweng and Lamai, known for swimming, nightlife, and water sports. The north coast offers a balance of beautiful beaches, local charm such as Maenam and Bantai. Meanwhile, the west coast is famous for its spectacular sunsets, quieter atmosphere, and more secluded stretches of sand.

Some visitors want beach clubs and nightlife. Others dream of palm trees, calm water, and having the beach almost entirely to themselves.

The good news? Koh Samui has all of it.

Before we explore each beach in detail, here's a quick overview.

Should You Stay Near the Beach You Like Most?

Not necessarily. Your favorite beach for a day trip may not be the best place to stay. Some visitors spend their days at Silver Beach but stay in Lamai. Others stay in Bantai but explore beaches all around the island. We'll explain more in our guide on Where to Stay on Koh Samui.

Understanding Tides on Koh Samui

One thing many travel guides fail to mention is that tides can dramatically change your beach experience. A beach that looks perfect in a photo may feel completely different depending on the time of day. And the time or duration of the tides is surprisingly unpredictable!

East Coast Beaches

The east coast generally offers the most reliable swimming conditions.

Beaches such as:
Chaweng
Chaweng Noi
Lamai
Silver Beach
Coral Cove

typically maintain deeper water closer to shore and are less affected by dramatic low tides. This is one reason these beaches became so popular with tourists.

West Coast Beaches

The west coast is famous for sunsets but can be significantly affected by low tide.

Beaches such as:
Lipa Noi
Taling Ngam
Bang Makham
Laem Yai

often become very shallow during low tide, sometimes requiring visitors to walk quite far before reaching deeper water. For families with young children, this can actually be a benefit. For adults hoping to swim, it's something worth considering.

North Coast Beaches

The north coast offers a good balance.

Areas such as:
Bantai
Maenam
Bang Por

typically remain enjoyable throughout the tidal cycle while still offering calmer conditions than the east coast.

Tides and Snorkeling

If snorkeling is on your bucket list, and you're hoping to snorkel off one of Samui's beaches, timing matters.

Generally speaking, snorkeling is best around mid to high tide when:

  • Water visibility improves

  • Coral and rocks remain submerged

  • Entry into the water is easier

Conditions vary daily and throughout the year, so always assess the water before entering.

Chaweng Beach

Kayaking at Chaweng Beach
Chaweng Beach

Best For:

Nightlife, first-time visitors, water sports, and travelers who want to be in the center of the action. Chaweng is Koh Samui's most famous beach and the island's tourism hub.

Stretching for approximately 7 kilometers, it offers soft white sand, clear water, beach clubs, restaurants, shopping, and some of the island's busiest nightlife.

For many visitors, Chaweng is exactly what they imagine when they picture a tropical holiday.

SEEN Beach Club - Chaweng Beach

Pros

Beautiful white sand
Great swimming conditions
Plenty of restaurants and bars
Water sports and activities
Easy to get around without a vehicle

Cons

Can become very crowded
Busy atmosphere
Less authentic than other areas
Higher prices than in many local areas

Good to Know

Chaweng tends to divide opinion more than any other beach on the island. Some visitors love the energy, convenience, shopping, and nightlife. Others find it too busy and commercialized.

Neither group is wrong.

If you enjoy having everything on your doorstep and don't mind sharing the beach with lots of other travelers, Chaweng can be a fantastic choice. If you're looking for peace and authenticity, you'll probably prefer some of the quieter beaches further north or west.

Chaweng Noi Beach

Best For:

Visitors who love Chaweng's beach but prefer a slightly quieter atmosphere. Located just south of Chaweng, Chaweng Noi offers many of the same benefits but with fewer crowds. The sand is beautiful, the water is typically excellent for swimming, and the beach feels more relaxed overall. Many visitors find Chaweng Noi strikes the perfect balance between convenience and tranquility.

Pros

Excellent swimming
Beautiful scenery
Less crowded than Chaweng
Good resort options

Cons

Fewer dining options within walking distance
Accommodation tends to be more expensive

Lamai Beach

Best For:

Travelers seeking a lively atmosphere without quite as much intensity as Chaweng. Lamai is often described as Chaweng's more relaxed sibling. You'll still find restaurants, nightlife, beach bars, and plenty of activity, but generally with slightly fewer crowds.
The beach itself is long, attractive, and excellent for swimming.

Pros

Beautiful beach
Plenty of restaurants
Good swimming conditions
More relaxed than Chaweng

Cons

Some areas can still feel busy
Less family-friendly than other beaches
Nightlife may not appeal to everyone

Silver Beach (aka Crystal Bay)

Crystal Bay - Silver Beach
Silver Beach aka Crystal Bay

Best For:

Swimming, snorkeling, photography, and postcard-perfect tropical scenery. If you search online for the most beautiful beach on Koh Samui, Silver Beach, also known as Crystal Bay, is likely to appear near the top of almost every list. And honestly, it's easy to see why.

This small bay features crystal-clear water, soft sand, dramatic rocks, and excellent snorkeling opportunities during suitable conditions. It's one of the most photogenic beaches on the island.

Crystal Bay

Pros

Stunning scenery
Excellent snorkeling
Beautiful swimming conditions
Great photo opportunities

Cons

Can become extremely crowded
Limited space on the beach
Often busy with day visitors

Local Perspective

If you've spent any time researching Koh Samui, you've probably already seen Silver Beach appear on dozens of travel blogs and Instagram accounts.

The reason is simple: it's genuinely beautiful.

Crystal-clear water, soft sand, and dramatic granite boulders make it one of the island's most photogenic beaches.

The downside? Almost everyone else knows about it too.

During peak periods, Silver Beach can become surprisingly crowded. Finding a spot on the sand isn't always easy, and the atmosphere can feel very different from the peaceful paradise many visitors expect.

Our advice? Don't let that stop you from visiting, but manage your expectations if you're hoping for solitude, and visit early in the morning if possible.

Coral Cove Beach

Best For:

Snorkeling, clear water, and visitors looking for a smaller, more natural beach. Tucked between Chaweng and Lamai, Coral Cove feels very different from the larger beaches nearby. The bay is framed by granite boulders and offers some of the best shore-access snorkeling on Koh Samui. Because it's smaller and less developed, Coral Cove feels more secluded than Chaweng or Lamai.

Pros

Excellent snorkeling
Beautiful natural scenery
Clear water
Less commercialized

Cons

Limited facilities
Rocky sections
Smaller beach area
Not easily accessible

Local Perspective

While Silver Beach often gets the attention, Coral Cove is frequently overlooked.

For visitors who enjoy snorkeling and a more natural setting, it can actually be one of the most rewarding beaches on the island to visit for a day. And since it's not far from Silver Beach (Crystal Bay), it makes a great combo for a day of exploring beaches on the island.

Hin Ta & Hin Yai Bays

Hin Ta Hin Yai Bay
Hin Ta Hin Yat - Koh Samui

Best For:

Snorkeling, exploring, photography, and discovering a different side of Koh Samui.

Most visitors know Hin Ta and Hin Yai because of the famous rock formations. What many people don't realize is that the surrounding coastline also features small coves and rocky bays that can offer surprisingly good snorkeling opportunities. The underwater landscape here is very different from the island's larger sandy beaches.

Pros

Unique scenery
Interesting snorkeling
Fewer tourists than nearby Lamai
Great photography opportunities

Cons

Rocky entry points
Conditions vary depending on the weather and tides
Not ideal for young children

Fisherman's Village Beach

Fireshow at Coco Tam's - Fisherman's Village Beach
Fire Show @ Coco Tam's, Visherman's Village

Best For:

Couples, dining, walkability, and visitors who enjoy atmosphere over beach quality.

The beach itself isn't the main attraction here. What makes Fisherman's Village special is the atmosphere. Boutique shops, cafés, restaurants, and the famous Friday Night Market make this one of Koh Samui's most popular destinations. It's also one of the most walkable areas on the island.

Fresh Coconut at Coco Tam's

Pros

Excellent dining
Highly walkable
Great atmosphere
Perfect for evening strolls

Cons

Beach quality is average compared to other beaches
Higher prices than in many areas of Koh Samui
Can become busy during high season or market nights

Good to Know

Fisherman's Village is one of the island's more polished and sought-after areas. While many visitors love the atmosphere, accommodation, shopping, food, and drinks generally cost more than in places such as Maenam or Bantai.

Local Perspective

Fisherman's Village isn't the beach we'd recommend if your goal is spending all day swimming or snorkeling. What makes it special is everything around the beach.
If you enjoy waterfront dining, evening walks, boutique shopping, and being able to leave your scooter parked for the day, Fisherman's Village is hard to beat.

Maenam Beach

Maenam Beach

Best For:

Families, long beach walks, relaxed holidays, and travelers looking for a quieter alternative to Chaweng.

Maenam is one of the longest beaches on Koh Samui, stretching approximately 7 kilometers along the island's northern coast.

While it doesn't receive as much attention as Chaweng or Lamai, many long-term visitors and returning travelers consider Maenam one of the most enjoyable beach areas on the island.

The beach offers a wonderful balance between local life and tourism. You'll find restaurants, cafés, convenience stores, massage shops, and accommodation options, but without the crowds and noise associated with Koh Samui's busiest areas.

Pros

Long sandy beach
Family-friendly atmosphere
Beautiful views of Koh Phangan
Plenty of dining options nearby
Great for swimming, deeper water
More relaxed than Chaweng or Lamai

Cons

Limited nightlife
Some sections are more developed than others
Not as walkable as Fisherman's Village

Maenam Beach

Local Perspective

One of the things we love about Maenam is its versatility.
You can spend a peaceful morning on the beach, enjoy lunch at a beachfront restaurant, and still be within a short drive of Fisherman's Village, Chaweng, or the island's major attractions. For many visitors, Maenam offers one of the best balances on Koh Samui.

Bantai Beach

Bantai Beach - daytime
Bantai Beach - daytime

Best For:

Families, couples, explorers, swimming, snorkeling, sunsets, and travelers seeking a more authentic island experience.

Most visitors flock to Chaweng, Lamai, and Fisherman's Village. Meanwhile, Bantai remains one of Koh Samui's best-kept secrets.

Located between Maenam and Bang Por, Bantai offers a completely different atmosphere from the island's busiest tourist areas. Here you'll find fewer large resorts, fewer crowds, and a much stronger connection to local island life.

The beach itself is beautiful, with postcard-perfect tropical scenery, soft sand, calm waters, swaying palm trees, and stunning views of Koh Phangan.

Bantai Beach

Pros

Excellent family beach
Great swimming conditions
Beautiful sunsets
Generally uncrowded
A few nice dining options
Authentic local atmosphere
Good snorkeling opportunities during suitable conditions

Cons

Limited nightlife
Fewer resorts
Less walkable than major tourist areas, but still with all conveniences within walking distance

Local Perspective

Bantai offers something that is becoming increasingly difficult to find on Koh Samui: a beautiful beach that still feels like Koh Samui.

While much of the island has become increasingly developed, Bantai retains a relaxed atmosphere where local life and tourism coexist naturally.

Many guests arrive expecting to spend most of their time exploring the island, only to find themselves returning to Bantai Beach day after day because of its peaceful atmosphere and natural beauty.

Bantai Beach - sunset
Bantai Beach sunset

Good To Know

Views of Koh Phangan are particularly beautiful from Bantai Beach, especially at sunrise and sunset.

The sheltered bay often provides calmer swimming conditions than some of Koh Samui's larger beaches.

During suitable conditions, snorkeling can be surprisingly rewarding. Guests staying at Baan Suay Bantai can bring the complimentary snorkel masks to explore the underwater world.

Bang Por Beach

Sunset at Bang Por Beach

Best For:

Peace seekers, long beach walks, local restaurants, and beautiful sea views. Bang Por often gets overlooked by visitors rushing between Maenam and the west coast.

That's a mistake.

This peaceful stretch of coastline offers some of the island's most relaxed beachfront dining and beautiful views toward Koh Phangan.

Iced Latte at Bang Por Beach

Pros

Relaxed local atmosphere
Beautiful sea views
Excellent beachfront restaurants
Less crowded than the island's main tourist beaches

Cons

Limited nightlife
Fewer activities
Some sections are affected by low tide and it's not always the best beach for swimming

Sunset Bang Por Beach
Sunset @ Bang Por Beach

Local Perspective

Bang Por has become particularly popular with long-term visitors, retirees, and digital nomads who appreciate its slower pace and authentic atmosphere.

Good To Know

Bang Por is home to several excellent beachfront seafood restaurants where you can enjoy lunch with your feet almost in the sand while overlooking Koh Phangan.

Choeng Mon Beach

Best For:

Families, couples, resort stays, and travelers looking for comfort and convenience.

Choeng Mon is one of Koh Samui's most popular resort areas. The beach itself is beautiful, with soft sand and generally calm water, making it particularly appealing to families. Unlike Chaweng, the atmosphere here is much more relaxed.

Pros

Beautiful beach
Family-friendly
Calm swimming conditions
Excellent resort options
Some watersport opportunities

Cons

Higher prices
Less local character
Limited nightlife

Local Perspective

Choeng Mon is ideal for visitors who enjoy the convenience and facilities of larger resorts but still want a quieter beach experience than Chaweng.

Just keep in mind that accommodation, dining, and services here are generally more expensive than in most other areas.

Good To Know

The sheltered bay often provides calmer swimming conditions than some of Koh Samui's larger beaches.

Samrong Beach

Best For:

Couples, quiet beach days, and escaping the crowds.

Located near Koh Samui's northern tip, Samrong Beach remains one of the island's lesser-known beaches.

Tucked away in a beautiful bay, it offers calm water, soft sand, and a peaceful atmosphere that feels worlds away from Chaweng.

Pros

Peaceful atmosphere
Beautiful scenery
Calm water
Usually uncrowded

Cons

Limited facilities
Less convenient to reach
Few nearby restaurants

Local Perspective

If you're searching for a beach where you'll likely spend more time listening to waves than other tourists, Samrong is worth seeking out.

Good To Know

Because Samrong is tucked away in a sheltered bay, conditions are often calmer than at some of the island's larger beaches.

Getting There

Samrong Beach is easiest reached by scooter, car, or taxi. Public transportation options are limited.

Secret Beach

Secret Beach Koh Samui
"Secret Beach" @ Five Islands Estate

Best For:

Photography, swimming, and exploring the south-west coast, which makes a lovely day on it's own.

Tucked away on Koh Samui's quieter southwest coast, this small hidden beach remains unknown to many visitors. Unlike some of the island's more famous beaches, you'll often find very few people here, making it a great option for those seeking peace and tranquility.

The beach isn't large and facilities are limited, but that's precisely part of its charm. Combined with nearby viewpoints overlooking the Five Islands, it makes for a wonderful stop while exploring this less-visited part of Koh Samui.

Pros

Beautiful scenery
More secluded
No crowds
Easy to combine with other nearby beaches
Great for photography

Cons

Limited facilities and amenities
Can be difficult to find if you don't know where you're going
Best accessed with your own transportation
Swimming conditions can vary significantly depending on tides

Local Perspective

We debated whether to include Secret Beach in our hidden gems section.

The truth is that it's beautiful, but it's slowly getting discovered.

Social media has done its job.

If you're searching for an untouched, hidden paradise, Secret Beach may disappoint during high season. If you're looking for a beautiful beach that is still quieter than Chaweng or Lamai, it's absolutely worth visiting.

Good to know

Best visited with your own transportation

Easy to combine with Taling Ngam, the Five Islands viewpoints, and other west coast beaches

Nathon Beach

I Love Samui Sign - Nathon Beach
Iconic "I Love Samui" Sign - Nathon Beach

Best For:

Sunsets, local culture, and experiencing everyday island life.

Nathon is Koh Samui's main port town and often serves as visitors' first introduction to the island. While it isn't known as a swimming beach, it offers something many beach destinations don't: authenticity.

Here you'll find local businesses, markets, fishing boats, ferries, and everyday island life.

Highlights

Main ferry piers
Beautiful sunset views
I Love Koh Samui sign
Local atmosphere
Small local eveing market

Local Perspective

Nathon won't win any awards for swimming, but that's not why people visit.

This is one of the few places on Koh Samui where you can still experience everyday island life largely untouched by tourism.

Good To Know

Most visitors only pass through Nathon while arriving or departing by ferry, but it's actually one of the best places on the island to experience local life and enjoy a sunset.

Sunset Restaurant by the curve overlooking the "I Love Samui" sign is a definite recommendation for a delicious Thai meal with sunset views.

Bang Makham Beach

Bang Makham Beach
Bang Makham Beach

Best For:

Sunsets, peace, and off-the-beaten-path exploration.

Bang Makham remains one of Koh Samui's least-visited coastal areas.

While it isn't known for swimming, it offers beautiful views, incredible sunsets, and a level of tranquility that's increasingly difficult to find.

Pros

Extremely quiet
Spectacular sunset views
Authentic local atmosphere

Cons

Limited facilities
Not ideal for swimming
Requires transportation

Sunset Sessions Bang Makham Beach
Sunset Sessions at Bang Makham Beach

Getting There

Having your own transportation is recommended as public transport options are limited and most visitors don't stumble upon Bang Makham by accident.

Laem Yai Beach

Best For:

Sunsets, photography, and tranquility.

Laem Yai is one of Koh Samui's most underrated coastal areas. Unlike many of the island's more famous beaches, it remains remarkably peaceful and uncrowded.

Pros

Stunning sunsets
Very quiet
Beautiful scenery

Cons

Limited facilities
Not ideal for snorkeling
Better for relaxing than swimming

Local Perspective

This isn't necessarily the beach you'll choose for a full day of swimming, but it may be one of the best places on the island to watch the sun disappear into the Gulf of Thailand.

Getting There

Having your own transportation is highly recommended.

Lipa Noi Beach

Lipa Noi Beach
Lipa Noi Beach @ I-Talay

Best For:

Families, sunsets, and peaceful holidays.

Lipa Noi is often considered one of the island's best family beaches. The water is generally calm, the atmosphere relaxed, and the sunsets spectacular.

Pros

Family-friendly
Calm water
Beautiful sunsets
Peaceful atmosphere

Cons

Can become very shallow at low tide
Limited nightlife
Fewer attractions nearby

Local Perspective

Families often fall in love with Lipa Noi because the calm, shallow water allows children to play safely while parents relax and enjoy the scenery.

Good To Know

During low tide, the water can become extremely shallow, making it less suitable for swimming but ideal for families with young children.

Taling Ngam Beach

Best For:

Romance, sunsets, and escaping the crowds.

Taling Ngam feels like a different world compared to Chaweng. The scenery is stunning, the pace is slower, and the views are among the most beautiful on the island.

Pros

Incredible sunsets
Peaceful atmosphere
Romantic setting
Beautiful natural scenery

Cons

Far from many attractions
Limited nightlife
Requires transportation

Local Perspective

If your dream holiday involves quiet beaches, spectacular sunsets, and escaping the crowds, Taling Ngam deserves a place near the top of your list.

Good To Know

Taling Ngam is one of the best places on Koh Samui to watch the famous Five Islands silhouetted against the sunset.

Thong Krut Beach

Best For:

Island hopping, seafood lovers, and local culture.

Thong Krut isn't Koh Samui's most beautiful swimming beach, but it serves as the gateway to some incredible adventures. From here, longtail boats regularly depart for nearby islands and snorkeling trips.

Pros

Gateway to island hopping
Excellent seafood restaurants
Local fishing village atmosphere

Cons

Not one of Koh Samui's best swimming beaches
Limited nightlife
Better as a starting point than a beach day destination

Good To Know

Most visitors come here as a jumping-off point for island-hopping tours, but it's worth spending some time exploring the village itself.

Best Snorkeling Beaches on Koh Samui

Many visitors are surprised to learn that Koh Samui actually offers some excellent snorkeling opportunities.

While destinations like Koh Tao are better known for snorkeling, there are still several places around Samui where you can spot marine life without joining a full diving excursion.

Is Koh Samui Good for Snorkeling?

Koh Samui is not Thailand's premier snorkeling destination, but that doesn't mean snorkeling isn't worthwhile.

While you won't find the same underwater visibility as destinations such as Koh Tao or the Similan Islands, there are still several beaches and nearby islands where you can enjoy rewarding snorkeling experiences.

1. Coral Cove Beach

Often considered the best shore-access snorkeling beach on Koh Samui.

2. Silver Beach

Clear water and rocky sections create excellent snorkeling conditions during calm weather.

3. Hin Ta & Hin Yai Bays

Interesting underwater landscapes and typically fewer snorkelers.

4. Choeng Mon Headlands

Explore the rocky edges of the bay for the best snorkeling opportunities.

5. Bantai Beach

Clear water and a bit of coral reef not far from the shore create excellent snorkeling conditions.

6. Koh Tan

Koh Tan Beach
Koh Tan Secluded Beach

The undisputed winner for snorkeling near Koh Samui and well worth a day trip.

What Marine Life Can You See?

Depending on conditions, snorkelers may spot:

  • Butterflyfish

  • Parrotfish

  • Sergeant Major fish

  • Angelfish

  • Sea urchins

  • Coral formations

  • Various reef fish

Best Time To Snorkel

Morning is usually best.

Benefits include:

  • Better visibility

  • Less wind

  • Calmer water

  • Fewer people

Local Tip

Snorkeling conditions can vary dramatically depending on tides, wind, and recent weather. If snorkeling is a priority during your trip, don't judge conditions based on a single day.

Shore Snorkeling vs Snorkeling Tours: What Should You Expect?

While several beaches on Koh Samui offer decent snorkeling opportunities, it's important to set realistic expectations.

If snorkeling is one of the main reasons for your trip, the snorkeling you can do directly from Koh Samui's beaches simply doesn't compare to the snorkeling locations visited on dedicated boat tours.

The waters around Koh Tao, Koh Nang Yuan, Koh Tan, and other nearby snorkeling spots generally offer clearer water, healthier coral reefs, greater marine biodiversity, and significantly better visibility than most beaches on Koh Samui itself.

That doesn't mean beach snorkeling isn't worthwhile. Beaches such as Coral Cove, Silver Beach, Choeng Mon, Bantai, and the small bays around Hin Ta & Hin Yai can still provide enjoyable snorkeling experiences, especially on calm days with good visibility.

However, if you truly love snorkeling, we highly recommend adding at least one dedicated snorkeling excursion to your Koh Samui itinerary.

Our Top Recommendation

If you're looking for the best snorkeling experience accessible from Koh Samui, a full-day speedboat trip to Koh Tao and the surrounding islands is hard to beat.

Expect crystal-clear water, colorful coral reefs, tropical fish, and some of the best snorkeling conditions in the Gulf of Thailand.

Check out the Full-Day Koh Tao Snorkeling Tour

Koh Tao - Koh Nagyuan

Hidden Beaches & Secret Spots on Koh Samui

One of the best things about Koh Samui is that there are still quiet corners waiting to be discovered.

If you're looking to escape the crowds, consider exploring:

Bantai Beach
Samrong Beach
Bang Makham Beach
Laem Yai Beach

A Local Tip For Finding Quiet Beaches

Most visitors stop at the first beach access point they find.

Walk just 5–10 minutes further along the beach and you'll often find dramatically fewer people. The same applies to parking areas and popular viewpoints. A little extra effort often leads to a much better experience.

Seasonal Differences & Beach Conditions

Beach conditions on Koh Samui can vary significantly throughout the year.

Factors such as:

  • Wind direction

  • Rainfall

  • Tides

  • Seasonal weather patterns

can affect swimming conditions, snorkeling visibility, and water clarity. A beach that looks crystal clear one week may look completely different the next.

That's why we always encourage visitors to explore multiple beaches during their stay rather than relying on a single destination.

Which Beach Area Should You Stay In?

Not every great beach is necessarily the best place to base yourself.

Some visitors spend their days exploring beaches all around the island while staying in a completely different area.

For example:

  • Families often love Bantai, Maenam, Fisherman's Village, or Lipa Noi

  • Couples may prefer Bantai, Taling Ngam, or Choeng Mon

  • Nightlife lovers usually gravitate toward Chaweng or Lamai

  • Travelers seeking a local experience often enjoy Bantai, Bang Por, or Nathon

If you're still deciding where to stay, be sure to check out our guide on Where to Stay on Koh Samui, where we compare the island's most popular areas and explain which locations are best suited to different travel styles.

Beyond Koh Samui's Beaches: Hidden Islands, Luxury Resorts & Insider Tips

By now you've probably noticed something: there isn't just one "best beach" on Koh Samui.

Every beach offers something different, and part of the fun is exploring several during your stay.

But if you're willing to venture a little further, there are even more incredible beaches, hidden coves, and tropical islands waiting to be discovered.

Secret Islands Near Koh Samui Worth Visiting

Many visitors don't realize that some of the most beautiful beaches in the area aren't actually on Koh Samui itself.

Fortunately, several stunning islands can easily be visited on a day trip.

Koh Tan (Coral Island)

Located just off Koh Samui's southern coast, Koh Tan is one of the area's most popular snorkeling destinations.

Unlike Koh Samui, much of the island remains undeveloped, creating a peaceful atmosphere that feels worlds away from the busy tourist areas.

Koh Tan
Koh Tan Island

Best For:

  • Snorkeling

  • Nature lovers

  • Day trips

  • Clear water

Good To Know

Most tours to Koh Tan depart from Thong Krut fishing village and often combine Koh Tan with nearby Koh Madsum (Pig Island).

Koh Madsum (Pig Island)

Pig on the beach - Koh Madsum - Pig Island
Pig Island - Koh Madsum

Pig Island has become one of the most famous excursions from Koh Samui. Its resident pigs have attracted visitors from around the world, creating one of Thailand's most unique beach experiences.

Best For:

  • Families

  • Photography

  • Day trips

  • Animal lovers

Good To Know

While the pigs are undoubtedly the main attraction, the island itself is beautiful and worth visiting for its beaches and scenery alone.

Koh Som

Located just off the northeastern coast near Choeng Mon, Koh Som remains one of the lesser-known islands around Koh Samui.

It's often visited by kayak or longtail boat.

Best For:

  • Kayaking

  • Exploring

  • Quiet beaches

Good To Know

Koh Som is one of the easiest island adventures for visitors staying around Choeng Mon and Plai Laem.

Koh Rap

If you're searching for a true hidden gem, Koh Rap deserves a place on your radar.

This small island south of Koh Samui remains relatively unknown compared to Pig Island and Koh Tan.

Best For:

  • Peace and quiet

  • Photography

  • Escaping the crowds

Good To Know

Many visitors describe Koh Rap as what they imagine tropical islands looked like before mass tourism arrived.

Can Resorts Keep You Off Their Beach?

One of the most common misconceptions among visitors is that many of Koh Samui's beaches are private.

The truth is a little different.

Are Beaches Public in Thailand?

Yes.

All beaches in Thailand are public.

The beach itself is not owned by hotels, resorts, or private individuals.

This means you are generally allowed to walk along the beach, swim, relax on the sand, and enjoy the coastline regardless of which resort sits behind it.

Why Do Some Resorts Have "Guests Only" Signs?

In many cases, these signs refer to:

  • Sun loungers

  • Beach beds

  • Swimming pools

  • Resort facilities

rather than the beach itself.

A resort may reserve its facilities for paying guests, but it cannot claim ownership of the beach.

The Important Exception

The one situation where access can become complicated is when the only practical route to a beach passes through private property.

In these cases, a resort may legally restrict access to its land, even though the beach itself remains public.

This is one reason why some beautiful bays on Koh Samui can feel almost private despite technically being public beaches.

Experience Luxury Beaches Without Staying at a Luxury Resort

Some of Koh Samui's most spectacular beaches are located in front of luxury resorts.

Many travelers assume these beaches are off-limits unless they book an expensive room.

Fortunately, that's often not the case.

Resort Day Passes

A growing number of Koh Samui's luxury resorts offer day passes that allow visitors to enjoy facilities such as:

  • Swimming pools

  • Beach access

  • Sun loungers

  • Restaurants and bars

  • Wellness facilities

without booking an overnight stay.

Alternative Ways to Access Luxury Resorts

Even when a resort doesn't offer a dedicated day pass, there are often other options.

Many visitors book:

  • A spa treatment

  • Afternoon tea

  • Lunch

  • Dinner

  • A beach club package

and then spend additional time enjoying the resort's surroundings.

A Great Example

Four Seasons Resort Beach
Four Seasons Resort Beach

The famous Four Seasons Resort Koh Samui is known for its stunning private bay, luxurious setting, and its appearance in HBO's White Lotus.

While staying overnight may not fit every travel budget, visiting for lunch, drinks, or a spa experience can be a fantastic way to enjoy some of Koh Samui's most beautiful scenery without spending thousands on accommodation.

Think of it as enjoying a little taste of five-star luxury without the five-star room rate.

Final Thoughts: Which Beach Is Best?

The honest answer?

There isn't one.

The best beach on Koh Samui depends entirely on the type of holiday you're looking for.

Some travelers fall in love with the energy of Chaweng. Others prefer the peaceful atmosphere of Maenam or Bantai. Some seek luxury in Choeng Mon, while others head west for the spectacular sunsets of Taling Ngam and Lipa Noi.

Our advice is simple:

Don't limit yourself to just one beach.

Rent a car, hire a scooter if you're an experienced rider, get a private driver for the day, or simply spend your holiday exploring. Some of Koh Samui's most memorable beaches are often the ones you discover by accident.

And who knows?

Your favorite beach may not be the one everyone is talking about. It might be the quiet stretch of sand you stumble across when you decide to take the road less traveled.
