Transportation Depends on Where You Stay

If you're staying in Chaweng, Fisherman's Village, or Lamai, you may find yourself relying less on transportation because restaurants, shops, and attractions are often within walking distance.

If you're staying in quieter areas such as Bang Por, Lipa Noi, or Taling Ngam, having your own transportation becomes much more important.

  • You're traveling as a family

  • You're not comfortable riding a scooter

How Do You Get From Koh Samui Airport to Your Hotel?

Samui Airport Photo
Koh Samui Airport

One of the first questions visitors ask after landing is: "How do I get from Koh Samui Airport to my hotel?"

Fortunately, getting from the airport to your accommodation is relatively straightforward, although transportation on Koh Samui can be more expensive than in many other parts of Thailand.

The best option depends on your budget, group size, luggage, and where you're staying.

Taxi from Koh Samui Airport

Taxis are the most popular and convenient way to get from Koh Samui Airport to your hotel.

You'll find official airport taxis waiting outside the arrivals area, making them an easy option if you simply want to arrive at your accommodation without any hassle.

The downside? Koh Samui taxi fares are among the highest in Thailand, and airport taxis are generally more expensive than transportation options you may find elsewhere on the island.

A taxi can be a great choice if:

  • You're traveling with family or young children

  • You have multiple suitcases

  • You're arriving late at night

  • Convenience is your top priority

Grab: A Cheaper Alternative but not always the best choice when coming from the airport

Grab is available on Koh Samui and can often be slightly cheaper than a traditional taxi.

The app works similarly to Uber and allows you to see the fare before booking, which many travelers appreciate.

However, availability can vary depending on the time of day and season. During busy periods, you may find that airport taxis are easier to secure immediately upon arrival. But it can be a bit more challenging to get a Grab to come to a location like the Airport or Pier.

In general, if you haven't already, it's worth downloading the Grab app before your trip to Thailand.

Good to know: When on Koh Samui, there actually is an even better alternative to Grab, and it's In Drive. We'll go into this more later!

Hotel Transfers

Many hotels, resorts, and villas on Koh Samui offer airport transfer services.

While these transfers may cost slightly more than arranging transportation yourself, they provide peace of mind, especially for first-time visitors. And they aren't always more expensive; this depends entirely on your accommodation.

At Baan Suay Bantai, for example, we work with a couple of trusted local drivers who offer much friendlier rates than many of the regular taxis on the island and at the airport. Their prices are often comparable to, or even lower than, those of Grab.

We're always happy to arrange airport transfers for our guests. For us, it's simply part of providing a great guest experience. Knowing that a reliable driver is waiting for you upon arrival means less stress, less hassle, and more time to start enjoying your holiday.

A driver will typically be waiting for you in the arrivals area holding a sign with your name, eliminating the need to negotiate fares or search for transportation after a long flight.

If you're staying at a resort, villa, or private accommodation, it's always worth asking whether airport transfers are available before you arrive.

Private Transfers

Private transfers are another excellent option, particularly for larger groups, families, or travelers seeking maximum comfort.

Unlike taxis, private transfers are usually booked in advance and often include:

  • Meet-and-greet service at the airport

  • Fixed pricing

  • Comfortable air-conditioned vehicles

  • Extra luggage space

Private transfers can be especially convenient if you're staying in quieter areas of the island where transportation options may be more limited.

Approximate Travel Times from Koh Samui Airport

Because Koh Samui Airport is located in the northeast of the island, travel times vary depending on where you're staying.

Chaweng: approximately 10–15 minutes

Choeng Mon: approximately 10–15 minutes

Bangrak: approximately 10 minutes

Fisherman's Village (Bophut): approximately 15 minutes
Maenam: approximately 20–25 minutes
Bantai: approximately 25–30 minutes
Bang Por: approximately 30–35 minutes
Lipa Noi: approximately 40–50 minutes
Taling Ngam: approximately 45–60 minutes

Our Recommendation

If you're staying in one of Koh Samui's busier tourist areas and travelling light, Grab is often the best balance between convenience and cost.

For families, groups, late-night arrivals, or visitors staying in quieter areas such as Bantai, Bang Por, Lipa Noi, or Taling Ngam, arranging a taxi, hotel transfer, or private transfer in advance can make your arrival considerably smoother.

After all, your holiday should start the moment you land.

Is Grab Available on Koh Samui?

Grab Logo

Yes, Grab is available on Koh Samui and is one of the most popular transportation apps used by both tourists and locals throughout Thailand.

If you've used Uber before, Grab works in a very similar way. Simply enter your destination, see the estimated fare upfront, and book a driver directly through the app.

For many visitors, Grab offers a convenient alternative to traditional taxis, especially if you prefer knowing the approximate price before starting your journey.

Is Grab Cheaper Than Regular Taxis?

In many cases, yes.

Grab fares are often slightly lower than those charged by regular taxis, particularly in the more touristy areas of Koh Samui. Another advantage is that you don't have to negotiate the fare beforehand, which many travelers find more comfortable and transparent.

That said, prices can vary depending on demand, time of day, weather conditions, and driver availability. During busy periods, fares may increase, and the difference between Grab and regular taxis can become smaller.

Is Grab Reliable on Koh Samui?

Generally speaking, yes.

Grab is widely used across Thailand and works well on Koh Samui. However, because the island is smaller than cities such as Bangkok or Phuket, the number of available drivers can sometimes be limited, particularly in quieter areas or during peak travel times.

If you're staying in more remote parts of the island, you may occasionally experience longer wait times than you would in larger cities.

InDrive: An Even Better Option on Koh Samui

While Grab is widely used throughout Thailand, many locals and long-term residents on Koh Samui actually prefer InDrive.

InDrive works similarly to Grab but is often considered one of the best transportation apps on the island. It tends to have a larger pool of available drivers, especially outside the busiest tourist areas, and fares are frequently lower than those offered by Grab.

One of the unique features of InDrive is that you can suggest your own fare, allowing drivers to accept, decline, or make a counteroffer. This often results in very competitive pricing.

For visitors planning to spend time exploring Koh Samui, it's worth downloading both Grab and InDrive before your trip. Having both apps installed gives you more options, more available drivers, and often the best possible price for your journey.

When Do Grab and InDrive Work Best?

Transportation apps are often an excellent choice if:

  • You're staying in a popular tourist area such as Chaweng, Fisherman's Village, Bangrak, or Lamai.

  • You only need occasional transportation during your holiday.

  • You prefer seeing the estimated fare before booking.

  • You don't want the responsibility of driving yourself.

  • You're heading out for dinner, drinks, or an evening at the night market.

However, if you're planning to explore the entire island, visit multiple beaches, waterfalls, viewpoints, and hidden gems, renting a car or scooter may still be the more practical and cost-effective option.

Transportation Options on Koh Samui

Now that you've arrived on the island and know how to get from the airport to your accommodation, let's take a closer look at the different ways of getting around Koh Samui itself.

The good news is that there is no single "best" option. The right choice depends entirely on your budget, travel style, confidence level, and how much of the island you plan to explore.

Some visitors are perfectly happy using Grab or taxis for the occasional trip to a restaurant or night market. Others prefer the freedom of having their own car or scooter, while budget-conscious travelers often make good use of the local songthaews.

Below, we'll take a closer look at each transportation option, including the pros, cons, costs, and who it's best suited for.

1️⃣ Songthaews: The Local Joyride

Songthaew in Chaweng

Let's start with the iconic Songthaews – Koh Samui's very own version of public transport. Picture a pickup truck with a converted bed, and you've got the essence of a songthaew. Two back benches can fit between 8-10 adults inside, with the occasional madman choosing to hang off the back bumper. Of all Koh Samui’s transport options, songthaews are the cheapest (besides walking). These vibrant vehicles roam the island's main ring road, offering a pocket-friendly way to traverse its sandy shores. Hop on board, grab a seat on one of the back benches, and prepare to make some new friends. Just remember to have the exact change handy, negotiate the fare upfront, and smile your way through this unique island joyride.

Routes and How to Hop On Board

These colorful converted pick-up trucks traverse the main ring road, spanning 51 kilometers and connecting every major beach town (excluding Plai Laem & Choeng Mon). While their routes generally follow the ring road and other prominent secondary roads, they are not fixed and depend on driver preferences and passenger destinations. Don’t let the signs displayed above the songthaew's front window and back bumper fool you, they do not indicate their origin or destination. And keep in mind, If you're headed to a popular spot, the chances of the first songthaew taking you there are higher. Otherwise, simply wait for the next one. This also goes for hopping on board! If you are outside of the busy and touristic areas, you may have to wait a while for a Songthaew to come. But hey, we’re in Thailand.. we take it easy here.

Using the songthaew on Koh Samui is a breeze:

1. Position yourself on a busy roadside
2. Wait for a Songthaew to approach and hail them down
3. Clearly communicate your destination and agree on the fare
4. Hop into the back and embrace the communal spirit of the songthaew, where you might strike up conversations and make new friends along the way
5. When you're ready to get off, ring the bell inside the songthaew to signal the driver to stop
6. Hop off, settle the fare with the driver, and off you go on your Samui adventure.

2️⃣ Taxis: Cruise in Comfort

For a more comfortable and private experience, taxis are at your service. Whether you're heading to a fancy dinner or exploring a different beach, taxis are a reliable choice. While meters may not be in use, negotiating a rate beforehand will save you any surprises. So sit back, relax, and enjoy the ride as your knowledgeable driver takes you to your desired destination.

While taxis are a convenient and comfortable way to get around Koh Samui, they are not cheap. Compared to many other destinations in Thailand, taxi fares are very pricey. If you are not planning to relax at a nearby beach for most of your Samui holiday and want to explore as much as possible of all that this beautiful island has to offer, you may want to consider renting your own vehicle instead.

3️⃣ Scooter-Taxis: Zoom-Zoom Adventures

If you're feeling a bit more adventurous, why not try a scooter taxi? Hold on tight as you zip through the island's enchanting roads, the wind caressing your face. This thrilling mode of transport is perfect for solo travelers or those seeking an adrenaline rush. Embrace the wild side and trust your experienced driver to navigate the island's twists and turns with ease. It’s usually a cheaper option than a regular taxi. It may not be your best choice if you’re heading to a fancy restaurant and are dressed nicely as you may arrive looking like your hairdryer exploded while you were getting ready.

4️⃣ Renting your own scooters: A Thrill with Caution

For the more daring souls, scooters and motorbikes offer an exhilarating means of transportation IF you have plenty of experience driving a scooter!

*Scooters are available for rent starting at 200 THB/day, although this may easily become 250–400 THB/day or more in the more touristy areas.

Should You Rent a Scooter in Koh Samui?

Renting a scooter is one of the most popular ways to explore Koh Samui, and it's easy to see why. Scooters are affordable, convenient, easy to park, and give you the freedom to discover hidden beaches, viewpoints, waterfalls, and local restaurants at your own pace.
Zip through the island's vibrant streets, feel the warm breeze against your skin, and immerse yourself in the island's energy in complete and total freedom.

However, before renting a scooter, it's important to honestly assess your experience and confidence level.

While thousands of visitors enjoy exploring Koh Samui by scooter every year without any issues, the island also sees a significant number of road accidents involving tourists. Steep hills, sharp bends, wet roads, unfamiliar traffic conditions, and inexperienced riders can be a dangerous combination.

Sadly, serious accidents and even fatalities involving tourists make the news on a regular basis. If you've been following Koh Samui travel news recently, you've likely seen some of these stories yourself.

Who Should Rent a Scooter?

Renting a scooter can be a fantastic option if:

  • You already have plenty of scooter or motorbike experience.

  • You're confident riding in different road conditions.

  • You feel comfortable driving on the left-hand side of the road.

  • You're traveling solo or as a couple.

  • You want maximum flexibility to explore the island independently.

  • You're comfortable navigating Koh Samui's hills, busy roads, and hectic traffic that is very different from what you may be used to.

For experienced riders, a scooter can be one of the most enjoyable ways to experience the island.

Who Should NOT Rent a Scooter?

We generally recommend considering alternative transportation if:

  • You've never ridden a scooter before.

  • You only have limited riding experience.

  • You're nervous or unsure about driving.

  • You're uncomfortable driving on the left-hand side of the road.

  • You're traveling with young children.

  • You plan on drinking alcohol and then driving.

  • You simply don't feel confident on two wheels.

If you're having doubts while reading this list, a rental car, Grab/InDrive, taxi, or private driver may be a much safer and more enjoyable option for your holiday.

What License Do You Need to Drive a Scooter in Thailand?

This is something many visitors don't realize.

Although rental shops will often rent scooters to tourists without asking many questions, Thai law officially requires you to hold the appropriate license to ride a scooter or motorbike.

In most cases, this means:

  • A valid motorbike license from your home country.

  • An International Driving Permit (IDP) that includes motorcycle entitlement.

A standard car driving license is generally not sufficient for legally riding a scooter in Thailand.

What About Travel Insurance?

This is where things can become expensive.

Many travelers assume they are covered by travel insurance simply because they purchased a policy before their trip.

Unfortunately, that's not always the case.

If you're involved in an accident while riding a scooter without the appropriate license or permit, your insurance provider may refuse to cover:

  • Medical expenses

  • Hospital bills

  • Emergency evacuation costs

  • Damage to third parties

  • Personal liability claims

Policies differ between insurers, so it's always important to read the terms of your coverage carefully before traveling.

Our Honest Recommendation

Scooters can be a fantastic way to experience Koh Samui—but only if you already have the necessary experience, confidence, and legal documentation.

If you don't, there are plenty of other ways to explore the island safely. A rental car, Grab, InDrive, taxi, private driver, bicycle, or even a songthaew can often provide a far more relaxing holiday experience.

Remember: there is absolutely no shame in deciding that a scooter isn't the right choice for you.

5️⃣ Renting a Car: Freedom on Four Wheels

Ready to embark on a grand island adventure? Renting a car is the perfect way to explore Koh Samui at your own pace. Cruise along the scenic routes, discovering hidden beaches and local hotspots along the way. Whether you're seeking a day trip or a longer exploration, having your own wheels grants you the freedom to create unforgettable memories on this tropical playground. Renting a car may be a safer option than a scooter, and definitely more convenient when traveling with the entire family.

*Cars are available for rent starting at as little as 800 THB/day. Although this may easily become 900–2,000 THB/day in the more touristy areas, it also depends on the season and vehicle.

Should You Rent a Car or Scooter?

One of the most common questions visitors ask before arriving on Koh Samui is whether they should rent a car or a scooter.

The truth is that both options can be great, and the best choice depends entirely on your travel style, experience level, budget, and who you're travelling with.

Rent a Scooter If...

A scooter may be the right choice if:

  • You're an experienced rider.

  • You're travelling solo or as a couple.

  • You want maximum flexibility.

  • You're comfortable driving in Thailand.

  • You enjoy exploring off the beaten path.

  • You're looking for the most affordable option.

Scooters are easy to park, economical, and allow you to reach many of Koh Samui's hidden corners with ease.

Rent a Car If...

A rental car is often the better option if:

  • You're travelling with children.

  • You're travelling as a family or group.

  • You have lots of luggage.

  • You're not comfortable riding a scooter.

  • You plan to explore the island extensively.

  • You want air conditioning and protection from the weather.

While a car is typically more expensive than a scooter, many visitors find the additional comfort, safety, and convenience well worth the extra cost.

Our Recommendation

If you already have plenty of scooter experience and enjoy the freedom of two wheels, a scooter can be an excellent way to explore Koh Samui.

For most families, first-time visitors, and anyone who isn't completely confident on a scooter, we generally recommend renting a car instead. The island is larger than many people expect, and having a comfortable, air-conditioned vehicle can make sightseeing considerably more enjoyable—especially during the hotter months or tropical downpours.

Driving in Koh Samui: What Tourists Need to Know

Whether you decide to rent a car or a scooter, there are a few things every visitor should know before hitting the road on Koh Samui.

The good news is that driving on Koh Samui is generally much less stressful than driving in Bangkok or many other major cities in Thailand. However, there are still some important differences that can catch visitors by surprise.

Driving on the Left

Like the rest of Thailand, vehicles drive on the left-hand side of the road.

For visitors from countries where driving on the right is the norm, this can take some getting used to, especially when pulling out of parking areas, entering roundabouts, or making turns at intersections.

Take your time, stay alert, and don't rush.

Road Conditions on Koh Samui

Most of Koh Samui's main roads are paved and generally in good condition. The island's 51-kilometre ring road circles almost the entire island and connects most major towns, beaches, and attractions.

However, road conditions can vary significantly once you leave the main roads. Smaller side roads may have potholes, uneven surfaces, loose gravel, or steep inclines.

After heavy rain, some roads can become slippery, particularly for scooter riders.

Be Careful on Mountain Roads

Some of Koh Samui's most beautiful viewpoints, villas, and hidden gems are located in the hills.

Roads in these areas can be extremely steep, narrow, and winding. Certain roads are challenging even for experienced drivers and riders.

If you're staying in a hillside villa or planning to visit mountain viewpoints, make sure you're comfortable with steep terrain before setting off.

Common Mistakes Tourists Make

The majority of accidents involving visitors aren't caused by a lack of driving ability—they're often caused by unfamiliarity with local conditions.

Some of the most common mistakes include:

  • Driving too fast on unfamiliar roads.

  • Underestimating how slippery roads can become after rain.

  • Attempting to ride a scooter without prior experience.

  • Driving after consuming alcohol.

  • Failing to wear a helmet.

  • Not carrying the correct driving licence or permit.

  • Becoming distracted by GPS, scenery, or wildlife.

Remember: Koh Samui is a holiday destination, not a race track.

Parking on Koh Samui

Parking is generally straightforward compared to many larger cities.

Most beaches, restaurants, attractions, and shopping areas offer free or inexpensive parking. Scooters are particularly easy to park and can usually be accommodated almost anywhere.

However, parking can become more difficult in busy areas such as Chaweng, Fisherman's Village, and Lamai during peak hours and special events.

Whenever possible, avoid blocking entrances, footpaths, or other vehicles, and always pay attention to any local parking signs or restrictions.

Final Tip

Perhaps the most important piece of advice is simple: drive defensively.

Expect the unexpected, allow plenty of time to reach your destination, and don't let the relaxed island atmosphere tempt you into taking unnecessary risks.

After all, the goal isn't simply getting from A to B—it's enjoying everything Koh Samui has to offer along the way.

6️⃣ Bicycle Bliss: Uncover Koh Samui's Beauty at Your Own Pace

Bicycle at Baan Suay Bantai

A really fun, healthy, and eco-friendly way to explore Koh Samui, is getting yourself a bicycle. When pedaling your way through the island's captivating landscapes, you really get the best chance of taking in the sights and sounds at your own pace. Feel the sun on your face, breathe in the fresh air, and discover hidden gems off the beaten path. Because you are moving at a slower pace you get to see so much more than you would blazing through on your scooter. Truly explore the local area.. from stunning beaches to quaint villages, the possibilities are endless when you embrace the pedal power. You can rent all sorts of bicycles on Koh Samui from city bikes or mountain bikes to e-bikes and they can be delivered at your doorstep.

7️⃣ Get Around on Foot: Discovering the Hidden Gems

It may not get you everywhere since Koh Samui is the second largest island in Thailand but sometimes, the best way to experience the charm of Koh Samui is by simply walking. Depending on where you're staying, you might find that your nearest beach or town is just a short stroll away. Take in the sights, stock up on essentials, and let your feet guide you to unexpected adventures. Who knows what treasures you might stumble upon?
