Understanding SongKran

Songkran is Thailand’s traditional New Year and is best known for its epic water fights, celebrated from April 13 to 15 all around Thailand, marking the start of the Thai Solar Calendar! Songkran is rooted in Buddhist culture, with people visiting temples, offering food to monks, and paying respect to elders. The term "Songkran" is derived from Sanskrit, meaning "astrological passage," signifying transformation and change. Traditionally, it's a time for cleaning homes, visiting temples, and honoring elders. Many Thai people take this opportunity to return to their hometowns by taking longer leaves or vacations, making it both a spiritual and joyous occasion. Water plays a central role in the festivities. Large-scale water fights where people playfully splash each other with water from buckets, hoses, and water guns, symbolizing the washing away of misfortunes and welcoming a fresh start, bringing blessings for the year ahead.

In 2023, UNESCO inscribed Songkran on its Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

How is SongKran celebrated in Koh Samui?

Splash

Songkran in Koh Samui is well-known all over the world and is one of the best and most popular places people visit due to its fun-filled atmosphere and bright colors. However, the celebration is quite different in Koh Samui compared to other cities like Bangkok and Chiang Mai, Here’s what you need to know;

One Day Water Fight
In other parts of Thailand, most cities celebrate Songkran for 3 days or more but in Koh Samui, it is celebrated for 1 day only, April 13th for a specific reason. Water conservation. Why? Because unlike other cities Koh Samui has very limited water resources and only depends on reservoirs and rainwater so the island is very vulnerable to water shortages. That's the reason why the island only celebrates Songkran for a day. This also balances the fun of Songkran and the need to preserve water for daily essential needs.

More Laid Back Vibes

You’ll see a lot of locals and tourists soaking each other up in Chaweng Beach, Fisherman’s Village, and Lamai but compared to other cities Koh Samui’s overall atmosphere is more relaxed.

Traditional Side of Songkran

During these celebrations most locals travel back to their hometowns, visiting temples, performing good deeds, and pouring scented water over Buddha statues. To experience this you can visit any Temple (recommended is to go in the morning).

Beach parties and nightlife

Songkran isn’t just about water fights, especially in Koh Samui. Beach parties, music festivals, and special events especially at popular clubs and bars are to be expected.

Plan things ahead

If you’re planning to come to Koh Samui or anywhere in Thailand for Songkran, book your stay and transportation early. This is popular for tourists and locals, so hotels, ferries, and such can fill up last. Planning can help you ease the stress so you can enjoy your Thai vacation and have fun. Keep in mind that planning ahead is much better to avoid juggling at the last minute.

Weather

Thailand is a tropical country. Since Songkran is celebrated during April, here's what to expect from Koh Samui during the Songkran celebration. Expect high temperatures ranging from 28-32 degrees Celsius and humidity around 79%, it's HOT! It's important to drink as much water as you throw and shoot. Replenish and stay hydrated during your stay.

Dress code

Songkran is a cultural and religious event so it's important to dress respectfully. Be mindful of your dress code. I know your OOTD is part of your stay in Thailand. During Songkran, which is a water festival it is better to wear light, quick-drying clothes and modest clothing (Hawaiian motifs, fun colors, or even brighter) and make sure to avoid revealing attires and white clothing that can be see-through when wet. Though you'll see foreigners wearing just their swimsuits during Songkran, follow the Thai example and cover up a bit when you're not on the beach or at the pool.

Respect the Locals
You’ll get drenched but not everyone wants to get soaked and wet so be mindful in temples, restaurants, and when passing monks, elders, or on-duty police. It’s important to play within the rules. Keep in mind that too much is not good. Thais are happy for you to join in the celebration. The more the merrier, simply enjoy the festival and don’t get angry.

Don't throw Dirty Water.

Use only clean water for the festivities. There are designated areas for water fights, so be mindful of local rules and regulations. Don't spray water directly on people's faces or eyes. Be aware of your surroundings and ensure to not cause trouble or accident while enjoying the festival.

Start early, rest later.
You’re traveling because you want to enjoy and have a blast. Enjoy your stay first, forget about the rest. During Songkran, the fun usually starts early morning and peaks in the afternoon. Hit the streets early, enjoy the energy, and relax at night at the beach or the bar chilling with your fresh coconut.

What to pack (or buy locally)?

Dry or waterproof bags and shoes.

Flip-flops or water shoes and waterproof bags are a must-have and it's best to leave whatever you don't NEED in your hotel. You’ll definitely get wet wherever you step foot outside as the whole kingdom is drenched in water from head to toe. If you’re not bringing a waterproof camera or phone, ensure to have a waterproof phone case/bag.

Sunscreen

The sun in Thailand especially Koh Samui isn’t a joke. Water makes it easier for the sun to damage your skin. Apply sunscreen and use lotions with 50spf (UVA and UVB) and don't forget to reapply. Sunglasses and a hat will be useful too. Your future, not-sunburned self will thank you later.

Water availability during SongKran

Given Koh Samui's effort in water conservation, especially during festivities like Songkran, it's common in some areas to experience temporary water shortages. It's all part of the island's ongoing efforts to take care its natural resources. But here’s the good news, if you are staying with us at Baan Suay Bantai, worry no more. We have you covered.
