May 25 2023 | Koh Samui by Baan Suay Bantai

If you are looking for a little more than ultimate relaxation on this picturesque island, if you’re looking for a little adventure, and to explore Samui’s hidden gems and breathtaking landscapes you may be wondering how you get around this island paradise? Fear not, my dear traveler! Keep reading to discover an array of exciting transportation options that will make your journey as thrilling as the destination itself.

1️⃣ Songthaews: The Local Joyride

Let's start with the iconic Songthaews – Koh Samui's very own version of public transport. Picture a pickup truck with a converted bed, and you've got the essence of a songthaew. Two back benches can fit between 8-10 adults inside, with the occasional madman choosing to hang off the back bumper. Of all Koh Samui’s transport options, songthaews are the cheapest (besides walking). These vibrant vehicles roam the island's main ring road, offering a pocket-friendly way to traverse its sandy shores. Hop on board, grab a seat on one of the back benches, and prepare to make some new friends. Just remember to have the exact change handy, negotiate the fare upfront, and smile your way through this unique island joyride.

Routes and How to Hop On Board
These colorful converted pick-up trucks traverse the main ring road, spanning 51 kilometers and connecting every major beach town (excluding Plai Laem & Choeng Mon). While their routes generally follow the ring road and other prominent secondary roads, they are not fixed and depend on driver preferences and passenger destinations. Don’t let the signs displayed above the songthaew's front window and back bumper fool you, they do not indicate their origin or destination. And keep in mind, If you're headed to a popular spot, the chances of the first songthaew taking you there are higher. Otherwise, simply wait for the next one. This also goes for hopping on board! If you are outside of the busy and touristic areas, you may have to wait a while for a Songthaew to come. But hey, we’re in Thailand.. we take it easy here.

Using the songthaew on Koh Samui is a breeze:
1. Position yourself on a busy roadside
2. Wait for a Songthaew to approach and hail them down
3. Clearly communicate your destination and agree on the fare
4. Hop into the back and embrace the communal spirit of the songthaew, where you might strike up conversations and make new friends along the way
5. When you're ready to get off, ring the bell inside the songthaew to signal the driver to stop
6. Hop off, settle the fare with the driver, and off you go on your Samui adventure.

2️⃣ Taxis: Cruise in Comfort

For a more comfortable and private experience, taxis are at your service. Whether you're heading to a fancy dinner or exploring a different beach, taxis are a reliable choice. While meters may not be in use, negotiating a rate beforehand will save you any surprises. So sit back, relax, and enjoy the ride as your knowledgeable driver takes you to your desired destination.
While taxis are a convenient and comfortable way to get around Koh Samui, they are not cheap. Compared to many other destinations in Thailand, taxi fares are very pricey. If you are not planning to relax at a nearby beach for most of your Samui holiday and want to explore as much as possible of all that this beautiful island has to offer, you may want to consider renting your own vehicle instead.

*Grab taxi is also available on Koh Samui and is a slightly cheaper option than regular taxis. Don’t have Grab yet?

3️⃣ Scooter-Taxis: Zoom-Zoom Adventures

If you're feeling a bit more adventurous, why not try a scooter taxi? Hold on tight as you zip through the island's enchanting roads, the wind caressing your face. This thrilling mode of transport is perfect for solo travelers or those seeking an adrenaline rush. Embrace the wild side and trust your experienced driver to navigate the island's twists and turns with ease. It’s usually a cheaper option than a regular taxi. It may not be your best choice if you’re heading to a fancy restaurant and are dressed nicely as you may arrive looking like your hairdryer exploded while you were getting ready.

4️⃣ Renting your own scooters: A Thrill with Caution

For the more daring souls, scooters and motorbikes offer an exhilarating means of transportation IF you have plenty of experience driving a scooter! Zip through the island's vibrant streets, feel the warm breeze against your skin, and immerse yourself in the island's energy in complete and total freedom. But again.. ONLY IF you have plenty of experience and are comfortable and confident enough. If you have any doubts, we highly recommend refraining from renting your own scooter. This popular choice of transportation with both locals and tourists is the main contributor to Samui’s very high road accident rate. You also need to be aware that even though you are easily able to rent a scooter anywhere (with or without a driver's license) a international motorbike license is required for driving a scooter in Thailand, officially. This also means that if anything happens and damage is cost, this will most likely not be covered by insurance if you don’t have the required motorbike driving license.

Ultimately, the decision is yours but remember, safety first! Don't forget to wear a helmet and promise to ride responsibly. 🙏🏼

*Scooters are available for rent starting at 220 THB/day

5️⃣ Renting a Car: Freedom on Four Wheels

Ready to embark on a grand island adventure? Renting a car is the perfect way to explore Koh Samui at your own pace. Cruise along the scenic routes, discovering hidden beaches and local hotspots along the way. Whether you're seeking a day trip or a longer exploration, having your own wheels grants you the freedom to create unforgettable memories on this tropical playground. Renting a car may be a safer option than a scooter, and definitely more convenient when traveling with the entire family.

*Cars are available for rent starting at as little as 500 THB/day

6️⃣ Bicycle Bliss: Uncover Koh Samui's Beauty at Your Own Pace

A really fun, healthy, and eco-friendly way to explore Koh Samui, is getting yourself a bicycle. When pedaling your way through the island's captivating landscapes, you really get the best chance of taking in the sights and sounds at your own pace. Feel the sun on your face, breathe in the fresh air, and discover hidden gems off the beaten path. Because you are moving at a slower pace you get to see so much more than you would blazing through on your scooter. Truly explore the local area.. from stunning beaches to quaint villages, the possibilities are endless when you embrace the pedal power. You can rent all sorts of bicycles on Koh Samui from city bikes or mountain bikes to e-bikes and they can be delivered at your doorstep.

7️⃣ Get Around on Foot: Discovering the Hidden Gems

It may not get you everywhere since Koh Samui is the second largest island in Thailand but sometimes, the best way to experience the charm of Koh Samui is by simply walking. Depending on where you're staying, you might find that your nearest beach or town is just a short stroll away. Take in the sights, stock up on essentials, and let your feet guide you to unexpected adventures. Who knows what treasures you might stumble upon?

So, whether you choose the joyride of a songthaew, the comfort of a taxi, or the thrill of a scooter, each mode of transportation adds its own spice to your island journey.
